I am a licensed attorney currently practicing law in southern New Mexico (Las Cruces in particular, but I travel to other communities when circumstances warrant). My practice is focused on estate planning and family law, particularly family law as it concerns same-sex relationships.
My estate planning practice includes Wills, trusts, tax planning, charitable giving, and probate. My philosophy is pretty simple: The lawyer's role is to accomplish the client's goals with an eye toward avoiding unnecessary complexity. If you want a dynasty trust just so you can tell your friends you have a dynasty trust, I'm probably not your ideal advisor. That said, I have plenty of experience with sophisticated planning techniques and I'm happy to recommend and implement them when they make sense.
On the family law front, while I do handle routine divorce and child custody matters, I focus especially on domestic partnership issues and same-sex divorce. My goal in family law matters is to obtain a fair resolution that all parties can stomach. If you're really mad at your partner and you want a bulldog who will fight every issue to the last breath, I'm probably not a good fit. This does not mean that I won't zealously represent your interests—I will—but experience has taught me that when everyone fights simply to fight, no one wins.
I focus on same-sex family law because it is interesting and because few attorneys seem to want to practice in this area. The rules may be somewhat different, but the end game remains the same: To help clients use the legal system to accomplish their goals as efficiently and humanely as possible.
